Dryness & Dehydration — South African Skincare Guide

South African skin gets dry differently from skin elsewhere. Highveld winter air can drop to 20% humidity. Cape Town winds strip moisture as fast as you apply it. Most imported skincare brands don’t account for this — their formulations were designed for European or American climates that simply aren’t this dehydrating.

Dry vs dehydrated skin — they’re different

  • Dry skin = lacks oil. A skin type. Genetic.
  • Dehydrated skin = lacks water. A condition. Caused by climate, harsh products, or insufficient hydration.

You can be oily AND dehydrated simultaneously. The treatment differs.

The hydration rules

  1. Cleanse gently. Foaming cleansers strip natural oils — switch to milk or oil cleansers
  2. Apply to damp skin. Hyaluronic acid needs water to work; apply within 60 seconds of cleansing
  3. Layer humectants under occlusives. HA → cream → done. The cream traps the moisture HA has drawn in.
  4. Add a hydrating mist mid-day. The fastest fix for highveld afternoons.
  5. Mask weekly. A hydrating mask gives a moisture boost beyond a daily routine.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin is a skin type — it produces less oil and tends to feel tight throughout life. Dehydrated skin is a temporary condition — any skin type can become dehydrated through climate, over-exfoliation, or insufficient water-attracting ingredients. Dry skin needs oils. Dehydrated skin needs humectants like hyaluronic acid.

How do I know which one I have?

Pinch a small area of skin on the back of your hand. If it springs back quickly, hydration is fine. If it stays creased or recovers slowly, you are dehydrated. Dry skin also feels rough and flaky, while dehydrated skin can look tired with fine lines that disappear after hydration.

Is hyaluronic acid the best ingredient for both?

Hyaluronic acid is excellent for dehydration — it holds up to 1000 times its weight in water in the skin. For genuine dry skin, you also need occlusive ingredients (oils, ceramides) to lock that moisture in. Apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin, then seal with a moisturiser.

Why does my skin feel drier in Johannesburg?

Johannesburg sits at 1750m altitude with low humidity year-round — typically 30-40% in winter. This pulls moisture from skin faster than coastal climates. Most Gauteng skincare routines benefit from hyaluronic acid mist (re-applied through the day) and richer night creams.

Can I over-hydrate my skin?

Not really — but you can over-exfoliate or use too many active ingredients, which damages the barrier and causes dehydration. If your skin feels tight after a routine, simplify: cleanser, mist, serum, moisturiser. Skip retinol and acids for a week to let the barrier heal.
