Skincare for Johannesburg’s Climate
Living in Johannesburg means living at altitude (~1,750m), in some of the driest air in South Africa, under high UV. The combination dehydrates skin, accelerates fine lines, and worsens pigmentation. Here’s how to adjust.
What Joburg does to skin
- Low humidity — winter air can drop to 20% humidity. Trans-epidermal water loss accelerates.
- High UV — altitude means thinner atmosphere; UV is more intense per minute than at sea level.
- Pollution — particulate matter and oxidative stress in the air.
- Hard water — strips natural oils faster than coastal water.
How to adapt your routine
- Switch to richer moisturisers in winter. Use Day Cream (Dry Skin) from May to September.
- Mid-day mist top-up. Keep Hydrating Mist at your desk for 11am dehydration.
- SPF 50 mandatory. Joburg’s UV index regularly exceeds 11 in summer.
- Antioxidant boost. Vitamin E + Vitamin C address pollution-driven oxidative stress.
- Filtered shower water if possible — reduces hard-water exposure.
