Fine Lines & Wrinkles — Anti-Ageing Skincare for South African Women
Fine lines around the eyes and mouth are among the earliest visible signs of ageing — and among the most responsive to consistent anti-ageing skincare. This guide covers what works, in what order, at what age.
What causes fine lines?
Fine lines form where skin loses collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid faster than the body replaces them. The biggest accelerators in the South African context are:
- Cumulative UV exposure (the single largest factor — 80% of visible ageing is photo-ageing)
- Dehydration (especially on the highveld)
- Repetitive expression (smile lines, crow’s feet)
- Hormonal changes (perimenopause and beyond)
The three anti-ageing actives that work
- Retinol — the gold-standard ingredient for fine lines. Accelerates skin cell turnover and stimulates collagen production. Start at low concentrations 2–3 times per week and build up tolerance.
- Peptides — signal molecules that prompt the skin to produce more collagen. Gentle, well-tolerated, and effective for daily use.
- Hyaluronic acid — instantly plumps fine lines by drawing moisture into the upper layers of skin.

At what age should I start anti-ageing skincare?
Late twenties is the ideal preventative starting point. Vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and daily SPF can be introduced from your early twenties. Retinol and peptide serums are typically added in your early thirties when collagen production begins its natural decline.
Do anti-ageing creams actually work?
Yes, when they contain proven actives at effective concentrations and are used consistently. The clinically supported actives are: retinol, peptides, vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and broad-spectrum SPF. Look for these on ingredient lists. Marketing claims without these ingredients are exactly that — marketing.
What is the difference between fine lines and wrinkles?
Fine lines are surface-level — caused by dehydration and early collagen loss. They appear when you smile or frown but disappear at rest. Wrinkles are deeper, etched into the skin even at rest, and indicate structural collagen loss. Fine lines respond quickly to hydration and retinol; wrinkles take longer and need both topical and lifestyle interventions.
Can I use retinol around my eyes?
Yes, with a product formulated specifically for the eye area. The skin around the eyes is thinner and more reactive than the rest of the face, so dedicated eye products (like our Retinol Eye and Lip Serum) use gentler concentrations. Apply with a light tap, not a rub.
Why do peptides matter for anti-ageing?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal the skin to produce more collagen and elastin. As collagen production slows from your mid-twenties onwards, peptide serums help maintain the structural proteins that keep skin firm. They are particularly valuable in the thirties and forties.
